SUTTON – Al’s Rubbish & Container Service has acquired the assets of Pace Waste Inc. of Auburn, a waste disposal service founded by James Pace in 2003. Owner Al Gerard said he bought out his competitor in March to expand his customer base in Auburn.
Al’s Rubbish offers dumpster rental services throughout the region, from Southbridge to Holden and in the Blackstone Valley. The company specializes in medium size containers, 10-to-15-yard temporary roll-off dumpsters for residential and commercial customers.
The company also offers weekly trash collection in Oxford, Sutton, Webster and Millbury. In addition, Al’s Rubbish handles house and garage cleanouts, furniture and appliance removal, junk car and scrap metal removal, and general yard cleanups. Recycling is a big part of the business, he said.
“We’ll be celebrating our 20th anniversary this year,” said Al, noting that he started the business with a single truck after having been laid off as district manager for Friendly’s Restaurants, where he worked for 18 years. “I went from ice cream to trash,” he quipped. He “dabbled in the antique business” for a short time and that led to the trash hauling decision. His wife Janet was supportive of the move.
Today, Al’s Rubbish has eight trucks and ten employees, and Al, now 58, anticipates another change. “My son Colby will eventually be running the company with Marnie, and I’ll be playing golf every day. And that may not be too far away.” Marnie Havalotti is the sales and marketing manager for the company, handling all the media promotion.
Marnie notes that three years ago the company installed a computerized system to track dumpsters and a navigational system for its drivers, making deliveries and pick-ups more efficient.
Al and Janet also have a daughter, Lauren, who’s in middle management at CVS. Janet is the director of human resources for Schneider Electric, which requires her to travel all over the globe.
For now, Al is still playing golf part time.
