SOUTH GRAFTON – After five years of operating the Annie's Book Stop at the Village Place in South Grafton, owner Elaine Boulanger is closing the store. She cited online competition from Amazon.com and the increasing popularity of e-readers as the reasons that many people have stopped buying books from small, independent used-book stores like Annie's.
“We still have a lot of good customers,” she said. “They come from as far as Webster and Douglas, but there just aren't enough of them,”
Elaine at one point had an inventory of 30,000 books and still has 10,000 in stock, mostly mysteries and romances. She is selling them for $20 for a paper grocery bag full, until December 21, when the remaining books will be packed and picked up by the Salvation Army. The store fixtures are for sale until then as well.
Annie's Book Stop is at 3 Greenlawn Ave. at Rt. 122, South Grafton, 508-849-1900. Hours are Mon-Fri 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
