He must be doing something right, as Art Cournoyer has been repairing most every type of motor vehicle there is for the past 30 years and he’s the only DOT Inspection Station in this area, unless you and your car or big rig don’t mind traveling to Worcester.
“The town of Dudley was great to work with in refurbishing this building,” said Art, “but we did have to wait for the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection to grant us a variance as we’re located close to the French River and are in a watershed area. Since we’re located about 200 feet from the river, we had to get the proper clearance. As oil changes and other similar vehicle fluids will be kept and then disposed of properly from this location, we had to file special documentation.”
Art’s station moved from 6 West Main Street in Dudley into the former location of an oil supply company located at 6 Oxford Avenue, and Art had a large addition built for DOT commercial and non-commercial inspections. The new building is 65 feet long x 20 feet wide and will be used exclusively for Massachusetts state vehicle inspections.
They can inspect commercial and non-commercial diesel and heavy-duty vehicles including big rigs, campers, fire trucks, 7D school buses, and most any other large vehicle, as well as automobiles and motorcycles.
On the day of this story, one of the Webster Fire Department’s fire trucks pulled in for its annual motor vehicle inspection. Art allowed the fire crew driver to drive the truck to the opening of the inspection bay and then Art jumped into the vehicle to drive it into the garaged inspection area.
Everything in the building is completely new, from the freshly painted interior to the radiant floor heating system, to the hydraulic vehicle lifts. Art works alongside fellow mechanic Chris Grochowski, with Chris specializing in motorcycle repairs along with their oil changes. They are a full-service repair shop and can repair everything from brakes to exhausts to engines along with the standard oil and filter changes and tune-ups.
They will repair light duty, medium duty, and heavy-duty trucks. Tire alignments are one of their specialties too. They are a certified Cooper Tire dealer but can also install any other brand of tire their customer wants, like Michelin, Goodyear, Uniroyals, Hankook, and Pirellis.
“I began working with my dad 30 years ago on East Main Street in Webster,” said Art. “Then we bought the Sunoco gas station at 6 West Main Street in Dudley from the Kenneway family in 2001. I sold the gas station in May and after retrofitting, we moved here in August. Our customers have been great.”
