One doesn’t have to look far to find evidence of Millbury Federal Credit Union’s extensive work on behalf of charitable organizations and community activities.
MCU’s participation in Millbury and Sutton’s recent Chain of Lights festivities is just the latest example.
Sandra E. “Sandy” Piscitelli, executive assistance to MCU President/CEO Joseph F. Barbato Jr., notes that “MCU employees participate in such other charitable opportunities as the Greenway Challenge, Grafton Celebrates the Holidays and the ACS Relay for Life, to name just a few.”
MCU’s Charitable Contribution Committee (CCC) was formed in 2005 and consists of both Mr. Barbato and Ms. Piscitelli, one MCU director and two MCU employees—appointed by the MCU Board of Directors annually. The committee meets monthly to review all requests for donations that come to MCU from various organizations. The committee works within a budget set by the Board.
“The primary focus of the committee is to evaluate charitable requests from community-based organizations and, commensurate with the MCU mission, to advise the Board of Directors on the merits of these requests,” Ms. Piscitelli, speaking on behalf of Mr. Barbato, said. “MCU’s field of membership is limited to the cities and towns within Worcester County that our five branches are located in: Millbury, Auburn, South Grafton and Worcester. These are the areas in which we focus our donations, in an effort to give back to the communities in which our members live and work.”
Examples of MCU’s past contributions include major sponsorships to support the area’s public schools, senior centers, historical societies and community events. MCU is well-known for its sponsorship of scholarships for high-school seniors at Millbury, Sutton and South High, and recently renewed its five-year scholarship commitment to Worcester State University.
Kim Goulette, executive director of the Central Massachusetts chapter of the American Red Cross, said that Mr. Barbato “served on our Board of Directors for a number of years. MCU has always been a great supporter of the Red Cross.”
Along with its major contributions, the MCU”s CCC donates to smaller events and nonprofits that support the arts, youth organizations, food drives, booster clubs and libraries.
