The Douglas Historical Society’s annual Rhubarb Challenge took place on Saturday, June 15, 2019, and judges scored entries in three categories: Sweet, Savory and Condiments.
First prize in the Condiments category went to Louise Begnoche’s Rhubarb Jelly. The second prize was garnered by Barbara Hendee for her Rhubarb Orange Sauce, Both cooks are from Douglas.
In the Savory category, the winner, with a crowd favorite, was Constance Athanas of Grafton. Constance entered a delicious “Rhubarbeque” made with both rhubarb and strawberry sauce. Her chunks of pork were in a delightful sauce that was flavorful and had just the right amount of heat.
Contestants showed that rhubarb lends itself to all sorts of baked goods and this was the category with the most entries. In third place Louise Begnoche took another prize with her Rhubarb Jelly Roll creatively presented on a rhubarb leaf! Shirley Mosczynski of Douglas took second prize with a scrumptious traditional Rhubarb Pie. The first place winners were young bakers Finch Harvey and Isabella Lavoie also of Douglas who tested their recipe, made changes and baked a prize winning Rhubarb Strawberry Cake!
A great time was had by all who attended and enjoyed coffee and rhubarb coffee cake during the judging. The Douglas Historical Society is looking forward to hosting the challenge again next year in the beginning of June. Be sure to mark your calendars!
