At Echobrook Nursery, fall is for planting

By Magda Dakin

The summer might be coming to an end but work in the yard is still a very busy time. “Fall is for planting,” says Francine Shear, owner of Echobrook Nursery in Worcester. Francine and her husband, Howard Shear, have owned and run the nursery for twenty years. “Fall is one of the busiest times in the garden because it’s the best time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials and we’ve stocked up to meet the demand. Hundreds of plants and lots of unique varieties keep our customers coming back. We like to offer plants and shrubs you wouldn’t see elsewhere.”

During those two decades, the nursery has adapted to the ever-changing market, searching out the high-quality products they are known for. “Over the years the business has grown and adapted to the needs of the customers we serve. When we saw a need for in home design, we started offering in-home décor services. When it became clear that customers needed help designing and implementing their yard and garden design, we branched out to fill that need,” continues Francine.

“With fall coming customers are changing over to their fall decor, pumpkins, corn stalks, mums, grasses and more,” she said. Howard adds, “Many of them have us come out and decorate their homes inside and outside to get ready for fall, Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

Echobrook is more than it looks on the outside. Behind the main building and displays in the front are acres of trees, shrubs, perennials. Seasonal items are stocked behind and alongside the building. As Howard says,”If we don’t have it here we will do our best to find it for you.”

“We source our trees and plants from the best vendors we can find and often handpick those we bring into the shop. We just brought in a large inventory of beautiful healthy house plants to enjoy now that we’ll be spending more time inside,” says Francine.

“We are expecting our first large batch of pumpkins now and will have them fresh throughout the fall. Then we move into the winter holiday trees. All our trees are locally-grown trees cut just a day or two before they are brought into our shop, which means they last longer throughout the Christmas holidays,” says Howard.

“Servicing our customers is what works for us. We offer and provide services that larger companies cannot provide. As a family business we are hands on every day, interacting with the clients and knowing what they want and need first hand, we can be flexible and actually do what we promise,” continues Howard.

Some of the customer friendly services include, potting up the plants you choose in your own or a new pot from the gift shop, installing larger plants and/or pottery in home or business, maintain interior landscapes for commercial spaces, design and build hardscapes, walks, water features, patios and walls and install irrigation systems. For the upcoming holidays, design and decorate your home inside and/or outside, customize wreaths and garlands, deliver and install your Christmas tree with option to decorate as well.

Echobrook Nursery is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday to 5:00 p.m., Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The gift shop at Echobrook is open the same hours and features a wondrous array of plant-related gifts, statuary, wall décor, seasonal décor and wreaths, succulents, gourds and, of course, plants.
