Free Trolley Tours of Historic Whitinsville

Saturday, September 23, 2017 - 9:00am

WHITINSVILLE, MA -  On Saturday, September 23, 2017, the Blackstone Valley community is invited to join the Northbridge Historical Commission on “The Whitin Legacy” trolley tours of historic Whitinsville. Tours are free, but seating is limited. Those interested may call the Whitinsville Social Library at 508-234-2151 to sign up. Please see full details below.

Through the narration of town historian, Ken Warchol, participants will imagine a time when the Whitin Machine Works employed nearly 5,000 workers from around the globe—and most of them lived right in town. A time when magnanimous mansions lined Hill Street, less than a mile away from the mill village of workers. We’ll consider what daily life in Whitinsville was like back then. We’ll appreciate how through the dedication of the town’s factory employees, Whitin Machine Works became world renowned for its textile machinery.

Tours last about 1 hour, beginning with a short presentation in the newly renovated Great Hall in upper town hall, 7 Main Street, Whitinsville. This is an extra bonus feature of this year’s tour. The Great Hall, where the dances and proms of yesteryear took place, was recently restored to its former glory. This was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission. The presentation will be followed by a brief visit to the historic Fletcher House across the street before boarding the trolley. (The tour including the trolley is handicapped accessible.)

While the tours come at no cost to participants, those interested may purchase an engaging walking tour brochure for $2, which contains information about the historic significance of Northbridge and many of its charming landmarks. We hope community members will join us for this wonderful adventure into our town’s rich heritage.
