Independent bookstore in Webster, MA celebrates 25th anniversary with expansion move

February 7, 2020 – Booklovers' Gourmet in Webster, MA is marking 25 years in business this March with big plans for an expansion move just a few blocks down the street to 72 East Main Street. In addition to a larger space, the new location will offer plenty of off-street parking as well as be fully handicap-accessible. The move is planned for early April 2020.

The store will also be celebrating its 25th anniversary with week-long sales, raffles, giveaways and cake at its current location, 55 East Main Street, from March 3rd-7th. Patrons will have a chance each day to win a $25 gift certificate and take advantage of a 25% off sale on all new and used books as a thank you for their ongoing support.

Owner/operator Debra Horan, a Webster native and graduate of The Rhode Island School of Design, is excited to be able to offer the new space to accommodate more people who would like to attend the many different events offered including book signings and author talks, workshops, open mics and space for groups to meet for book discussions, writing, game nights, knitting and more. The upgrade will enhance her vision for the store to be a central gathering place where people can meet and enjoy cultural happenings in a welcoming space. The café area will be expanded as well with more tables and chairs to sit and relax with a cup of organic, gourmet coffee by Hogan Brothers Coffee Roasters, espresso drinks, chai and homemade pastries provided by local bakeries. Local honey and specialty chocolates are also available.

The store will continue to carry a wide selection of new & used books on various subject matters as well as hand selected gift and seasonal items, many locally made & fair-trade, including pottery, wall decor, jewelry, candles, incense, journals and greeting cards. Local artwork will be featured on the café walls. Educational puzzles & toys as well as books for all ages will be highlighted in the children’s room. New this year is the ability to offer e-books and digital audiobooks in an online storefront through the My Must Reads app and a partnership with Bookshop.org, a brand new website platform launched in January that allows customers shopping online to specifically support local bookstores.

Across the country, independent bookstores are on the upswing. “In 2019, the American Booksellers Association welcomed 111 indie bookstore members that opened for business, an increase over 2018, in which 99 ABA member stores opened.”
