The Indian Princess paddle wheel boat completed the first leg of its 70-mile journey from Barrington, Rhode Island, to its new home at Indian Ranch in Webster, Mass., early this morning, and is now at a scheduled layover near the Rhode Island/Connecticut state line.
The 75-ft long, 20-ft-wide boat was lifted by crane onto a specially-built trailer and left Barrington at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, traveled overnight, and will be parked at Snow’s Clam Box on Rt. 44 temporarily before resuming its journey to Webster Lake. Massachusetts regulations require certain wide loads to be transported during nighttime.
Indian Princess owner Chris Robert said he expects the boat to arrive at Indian Ranch on Wednesday. While the prospect of the paddle wheeler's move to Webster Lake has been a source of local controversy for two years, Mr. Robert recently received permits from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Transportation to do so.
