When you think of a Country Club you may think stuffy, expensive, old, etc. But not so when you visit the Leicester Country Club. Perfectly manicured greens and lawns, neat white carts, freshly surfaced parking areas and a friendly, classy entrance to the main function rooms are what greet you when you enter the club. Although it started out as a great place to golf at reasonable rates, it’s also become a very popular venue for a great many events: weddings, golf outings, receptions of all sorts.
When you drive in you can see the well-tended gardens and the great condition of the lush, perfectly- groomed greens and tees. Situated in a town rich with history, the ‘golfing club’ was started in 1896 right after the Civil War. So you could say they’ve had more than a century to get it right, and they do. Golfers who came here many years ago are pleasantly surprised to see the new holes, the three par five holes and other upgrades that are constantly being made.
As an open, non-private golf club, the course is available to the public. Pricing to play here is extremely reasonable; exact pricing is available on the website at www.leicestercc.com, along with the opportunity to book your tee time immediately. “If you’re an avid golfer and spend a lot of time on the greens there are membership options, such as the weekday membership option for $800, which make it even more economical to golf here,” says General Manager Cheryl Orrico. Golf leagues are welcomed and available Monday through Friday.
The rolling hills of the course make it a challenging but fun place to play. The signature hole at Leicester Country Club is the 17th hole. The first 183 feet is uphill and the hole is tree-lined on both sides with a bunker protecting the right front of the green and another bunker catching any shots that are too far left. “The new tee box adds an additional 30 feet to this already great hole.” adds Cheryl.
Cheryl is a hands-on kind of manager, overseeing all aspects of the club. You might find her at the Grille, the nexus of activity at the club. Located at the rear of the main building, the Grille #19 serves freshly prepared lunches and dinners to golfers and the public too. The Grill also houses the golfers check-in desk and the small, but well-equipped pro shop. Cheryl makes sure it all runs smoothly with the help of a very qualified staff. “They work together as a team,” she says and that is why it all goes so smoothly. Most staff members are cross-trained in many jobs, making them better able to handle whatever a customer's needs might be.
With its easy access to the Worcester area, the club is the perfect venue for most any function, especially weddings. A favorite you will see listed in The Knot, the Leicester Country Club with Cheryl and her staff will go well beyond the norm to make your wedding experience the best it can be. From exquisite meals created and presented by Executive Chef Michael Winslett to the beautiful grounds ideal for making memorable pictures, the club is “perfect as a wedding venue,” according to a recent article published in Bride & Groom Magazine. The dedicated website for Leicester Country Club weddings is www.worcester-wedding.com.
But weddings are just he beginning. With several rooms and setups to choose from, your function can host as few as 40 to as many as 400 people. With the added benefit of a first class chef and kitchen, the food for your function is all created on site and served exactly the way you want it. So whether it’s a baby shower or a bar mitzvah, a retirement party, or a special birthday, they can do it all, right here. “Come and check it out,” says Cheryl, “and let us make magic for you.”
