AUBURN - NV Candles, a clever name for candles that you really want to have. The shop recently moved to a convenient location near the intersection of Rts. 20 and 146, at the site of the former Gift Chalet (which moved its business to strictly online sales). Watch for the sign and you can see the little chalet at the end of the parking lot.
NV Candles started out as the dream hobby of Veronika Skoromnik as a break from her more intense day job. With encouragement from her then-boyfriend and now-husband Nick Shifferle, the basement hobby grew into a successful wholesale soy candle enterprise. With a thriving online wholesale business, Veronika and Nick decided to venture into retail sales about two years ago. In the new location you will find at least 40 of the 74 colors and scents available at all times. A dizzying array of colors, jars, scents and accessories are displayed in the “chalet candle store.” All candles are made on site, and if you ask you might get to see it in operation.
Why soy candles? A very good question. Soy candles are said to burn cleaner than traditional paraffin candles, they burn longer, they are a renewable resource, they are biodegradable and easier to clean up. Soy wax is non-toxic and burns cleaner than paraffin wax, which burns with petrol carbon soot and gathers on every surface near the candle. Soy candles do not produce the toxic fumes that other candles do. Soy candles can burn twice as long as traditional candles, they burn slower and are cooler all without the black soot residue. Made from hydrogenated soybean oil, soy wax is naturally biodegradable. It is also easier to clean up off of surfaces. Soy is a renewable resource with a fast turnaround as opposed to paraffin which takes centuries to reproduce. Buying soybean products creates important economic growth for the agricultural sector of the US economy as well.
Nick and Veronika strongly believe in supporting the domestic economy and are pleased to be able to provide a way for their customers to create the warm ambiance of candles of all kinds without hurting the environment. Soy candles are great for many occasions including weddings, events and fundraisers.
Veronika will put your labels on the jars and custom-make them to your specifications. There are discount prices for larger orders (over $200) and a $0.30 per jar reduction if you do not want any labels at all. The candles are available in many traditional jars and tins and with the recent, more modern, addition of status and cube glass jars, there is a full variety of styles and sizes to choose from.
The virtual rainbow of colors and scents include the food scents of Carrot Cake, Cinnamon Bun and Apple Pie, the earthy scents of Evergreen Citrus, Sage and Cedar, and Frankincense, the floral scents of Lavender, Fresh Cut Flowers, and Plumeria, and lets not forget the sensual scents of Patchouli, Moonlight Path, and Baby Powder (yes, research says the rose, heliotrope and cucumber included in this scent has a very calming soothing influence). The website has a full listing of all the scents and colors.
Lighting a candle with a pleasant scent changes your home and environment and can make you feel happy or peaceful and/or energetic or even lower your blood pressure. Recent research reports that your sense of smell has the shortest connection to the emotional brain so scents can change your mood before you realize why. This route is so short that our conscious thinking brain can’t really step in and modulate. So if you need a quick pick-me-up the peppermint helps and if you want to be happy, try a citrus blend.
