Spring has sprung, businesses shake off the winter blues

by Christine Galeone

Spring has arrived. The days are growing longer. And that extra hour of sunlight seems to be shining on everything that needs a bit (or more) of spring cleaning.

But it’s also shining on things such as spring holidays, cheerful seasonal décor, sweet treats and more. Some Grafton businesses have been basking in that light. They’ve also been busy preparing for brighter days ahead.

.Signature Finishes, located at 204 Worcester Street in North Grafton, is not only preparing for Easter with some holiday décor on its shelves, it’s also celebrating spring and warmer weather with two upcoming events. On Saturday April 13 and Sunday April 14, the multi-artisan home décor, paint and antique shop will hold its annual Spring Open House. Then, on Saturday May 4 and Sunday May 5, the shop will hold its biggest annual event – its open house Garden Party. The shop will offer guests refreshments, and the artisan booths will be serenely decorated with garden-themed decor. Maureen Bane, the shop’s owner, hopes both events will help shoppers shake off the winter blues.

Other businesses with Grafton locations, Koopman Lumber & Hardware and UniBank, are two of the sponsors of another much-anticipated springtime event. On Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Whitin Community Center in Whitinsville, Beginning Bridges CFCE and Blackstone Valley Children’s Place will hold the 20th Annual Kids Fair. With the theme “Passport to Healthy Communities,” the free event gives families with young children the chance to explore community resources in a fun atmosphere. There will be free snacks, informational booths, giveaways, a teddy bear clinic, an Easter egg hunt, a story walk and more.

A Grafton business that will be returning, just in time for the warmer weather, is the Grafton Flea Market. The indoor and outdoor flea market, which features hundreds of vendors and a casual restaurant, is located at 296 Upton Street. Its return will happen Sunday April 7, and it will remain open every Sunday – through December – from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m.

In North Grafton, another popular seasonal business will re-open its windows on April 1. The return of the long lines at Swirls & Scoops, an ice cream and frozen yogurt shop that’s located at 68 Worcester Street, is another welcome sign of the season.

And Marcella’s Hotspot Salon, which was located in South Grafton for more than seven years, has just moved to a plaza not far from Swirls and Scoops. In January, it moved to 80 Worcester Street, Suite 10. New clients can get a one-hour massage for $39.99, instead of the regular price of $75. The salon offers sports, acupressure, Swedish, deep tissue and therapeutic massage, and it will soon offer medical massage as well. It also offers holistic healing sessions and a wide range of hair services.

Over on the Common, Murphy Academy of Irish Dance has been embracing one of its busiest times of the year. The dance school, located at One Grafton Common, has been busy sharing its love of Irish dancing with people at assisted living communities and with audiences at many St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, including the Worcester Irish Festival.

Reunion Tap & Table, located at 198 Worcester Street in North Grafton, has also been having an exciting month. The restaurant, which opened in September 2018, was recently featured on an episode of “Phantom Gourmet.” To celebrate, it held a viewing party at the restaurant, so it could watch the March 9 episode with its customers.

Another North Grafton restaurant has been busy preparing for Easter with two different options for people who want to enjoy a holiday meal at a restaurant. The Post Office Pub, located at 1 Ray Street, will have an all-you-can-eat Easter breakfast buffet from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday April 21 – with a visit from the Easter Bunny between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. It will also have an Easter Sunday menu beginning at 1 p.m. that day, with the final seating at 4 p.m. The entrée choices will include: Baked Ham; Prime Rib of Beef au Jus; Crusted Statler Chicken Breast; Dijon and Brown Sugar Glazed Salmon; Herb-Roasted Leg of Lamb; Butternut Squash Tortellaci with Grilled Chicken; Seafood Gourmet and Steak and Eggs. Reservations are available by calling 508-839-6106.

Whether the light is radiating from the spotlight or the afternoon sun, it’s encouraging to see Grafton businesses shining. And supporting them could be a fun reward for doing some of that much-needed spring cleaning!
