Thunder On the Lake 2014 in jeopardy

WEBSTER - The 4th Annual Thunder on Webster Lake hydroplane race that had been scheduled to take place the weekend of August 23 and 24 may be cancelled or reduced in scale.  Mike Grendell, founder and manager for the Webster race, said the American Canadian Hydroplane Association (ACHA) pulled funding for the Webster event because of financial issues earlier this season. Webster Lake was to be the sixth stop in the seven-race circuit of the  ACHA race schedule for 2014.

At press time, Grendell said that he was "scrambling to raise money" to still have an event on Webster Lake this year, even if reduced in size. Information as to the status of the race will be posted on the website:

The official cancellation announcement issued by ACHA follows.

For immediate release

Webster 2014 edition is cancelled

JULY 30th 2014, SALABERRY-DE-VALLEYFIELD – In a mutual agreement between the

Promoter Michael Grendell and the American Canadian Hydroplane Association it

was decided that the 2014 Webster Event scheduled for August 23rd and 24th be

cancelled. Insufficient funding is the root of this decision.

Over the past few years the Régates de Valleyfield organization, through its budget

for the development of sites has offered important financial sums to the event in

order to sustain it. Unfortunately the inclement weather on Sunday July 13th created

an important decrease in the organization’s revenue leaving little room to support

another event.

Also the Webster’s organization is not in a position to make up the monetary

difference that would allow the Event to take place. So that the ACHA 2015

Championship series is not jeopardized, corrective measures are immediately being

taken, stated Mr. Michel Poirier, General Manager of the Régates de Valleyfield. It is

strictly for financial reasons that both parties regret to announce the cancellation of

the 2014 edition of the Webster event.

It is to be noted that these measures in no way affect the three remaining events on

the calendar, St-Félicien, Tonawanda and Beauharnois. The goal of all events is to

generate sufficient revenues to become fully autonomous in the long term. Both the

Promoter and the General Manager of Régates de Valleyfield hope that these

drastic measures are only temporary and that the Event will be part of the 2015

ACHA Series.
