WEBSTER – It's official, the 4th Annual Thunder on the Lake hydroplane race will not happen. The primary sponsor for the event, the American Canadian Hydroplane Association (ACHA), withdrew its support for the Webster race last week after losing money in races earlier this season.
In its official statement the ACHA said “over the past few years the organization, through its budget for the development of sites, has offered important financial sums to the event in order to sustain it. Unfortunately the inclement weather on Sunday July 13 created an important decrease in the organization's revenue, leaving little room to support another event.”
The ACHA funding provided for the insurance, prize money, cranes, and other items needed.
The Webster event organizers and promoters Mike Grendell and Dave D'Allesandro had hoped to be able to secure another sponsor, but were unable to do so in the short time remaining before the race, scheduled for August 23 and 24.
Grendell and D'Allesandro said they plan to begin fundraising activity immediately for next year's event, hoping to regain their place on the ACHA 2015 circuit.
Thunder on the Lake had brought dozens of teams and thousands of spectators to Webster Lake the last three years for the spectacular high speed races.
