Pete's Picks

Thought we would never get to the first day in May. Finally, the good weather is on us. If you are a high school baseball fan, you can see a real good match-up tomorrow in Dudley as the two top teams in the area will be playing for bragging rights. The Oxford Pirates will be visiting the Shepherd Hiil campus to take on the Division 1 Rams. Oxford had 8 wins entering the beginning of the week and weather permitting the Pirates (8-2) were slated to host Quaboag on Monday and travel to South on Tuesday. Shepherd Hill (5-4) traveled to Tantasqua on Monday and David Prouty on Wednesday. I think both the Pirates and Rams will win their respective two prior games before they meet each other on Friday. Oxford should have 10 wins and already qualified for post-season play and the Rams should be 7-4 and on a nice roll after upsetting Marlboro in the consolation game of their school vacation week tournament in Hudson.

Sophomore starting pitcher John Hughes of Bartlett continues his recovery from an illness that has kept the Indian baseball player out of the line-up all season. I am hearing good things regarding a steady but slow rehab. Hughes is a very good athlete, who works very hard at the sport despite the New England weather. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, John, as we all know your determination and close family will get you through this adverse time in your young life.

Staying with the hometown Indians’ baseball team, the Hughes illness really hurt Bartlett early as the Indians had David Prouty and Oxford on in their first two games of the season as they lost 6-5 to Prouty, and 5-3 against Oxford. Evan Anderson is a purebred. Anderson throws it from the south side and the southpaw can swing the bat as well as any high school player in the area. A lot has to happen for Bartlett in May for them to make the post season. Winning the close games will certainly help.

The Bay Path baseball team started the season off with their annual successful Chili Chow Down headed up by Coach Mark Sansoucy.Look for Bay Path to once again qualify for the post season. They have a few good arms in righties Tyler Simons and sophomore Tucker Hetherman. The Minutemen swing the bats as they are averaging 9 runs scored a game and that stat is among the leaders in all divisions in Central Mass. Bay Path is 3-1 and played Assabet yesterday in a huge Colonial League matchup.

Just a few thoughts...Are you trusting the Red Sox yet?...The NFL draft is upon us...What do you think?...Defensive backs, receivers, linebackers, defensive linemen?... The separation with the tough defensive NFC teams from the Patriots is obviously clear to all of us... And Denver has done more to stay ahead of New England in the off season... The AFC East is the only division the Patriots can continue to give us hope for in the playoffs in 2014...
